Doppelgänger es una performance sobre la percepción de los refugiados en Europa. La crisis migratoria de 2016 supone el mayor desplazamiento humano desde la II Guerra Mundial. La equiparación de la figura del refugiado con el terrorista, violador o ladrón es el prtexto de una Europa que expone a este colectivo de seres humanos al hambre, la enfermedad, el frío y la guerra.

Uno de los ejemplos más ilustrativos ocurrió la Nochevieja de 2016, cuando más de mil denuncias sobre abusos fueron reportadas en Colonia. Algunos medios como Süddeutsche Zeitung o Focus relacionaron este suceso con los refugiados, promoviendo la xenofobia y legitimando a través de la figura del rapefugee la violación del derecho de asilo.

Doppelgänger es también un arquetipo literario. Se acuña en el s. XVIII como bilocación del protagonista y muestra las virtudes y mezquindades de éste. Se ha empleado en obras como Dr. Jekyll y Mr. Hyde de Stevenson, Rayuela de Cortázar o La Sombra de Andersen. En palabras de Strindberg el que ve a su doble presagia su propia muerte.

Doppelgänger también se traduce como el que camina al lado. En su obra Los ritos de paso Arnold Van Gennep presenta tres estados que definen todo tránsito: separación, margen y agregación. El fenómeno de los refugiados se encuentra atrapado en los ritos liminares o de margen, se desplaza en el limbo, habita el no lugar.

Doppelgänger is a performance about the perception of refugees in Europe. The  migration crisis in 2016 was the largest human displacement since World War II. The comparison of the figure of the refugee with the terrorist, rapist or thief is the pretext of a Europe that exposes this collective of human beings to hunger, disease, cold and war.

One of the most illustrative examples occurred on New Year’s Eve 2016, when more than a thousand complaints about abuses were reported in Cologne. Some media such as Süddeutsche Zeitung or Focus related this event to refugees, promoting xenophobia and legitimizing through the figure of the rapefugee the violation of the right to asylum.

Doppelgänger is also a literary archetype. It was coined in the 18th century as a bilocation of the protagonist and shows his virtues and meanness. It has been used in works such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Stevenson, Rayuela by Cortázar or La Sombra by Andersen. In Strindberg’s words, he who sees his double presages his own death.

Doppelgänger also translates as the one who walks next to him. In his work Rites of Passage Arnold Van Gennep presents three states that define all transit: separation, margin and aggregation. The phenomenon of refugees is trapped in the liminal or margin rites, it moves in limbo, it inhabits the non-place.
